3D Scanning Technology: How Accurate Is It?

What Is Laser Scanning?

Laser scanning technology is used in construction to create a 3D survey of a building or land. It works by shining a laser onto the object and collecting the data from another sensor to create millions of data points of 3D XYZ coordinates that can be placed together to create a survey and 3D model of the building or land that can be developed into a CAD file.

It’s a quick process, that records thousands of data points per second and is one of the most accurate ways to create a high accuracy survey. It uses triangulation or time of flight to calculate data points, from where the laser comes into contact.

From here, surveys can be produced and customised to the level of detail required for your needs, be that a floor plan or full 3D model replication.

How Accurate Is 3D Laser Scanning?

3D laser scanning is becoming increasingly common to use in construction and building surveys because of its high level of accuracy and attention to detail. It has an accuracy of 0.002 to 0.197 meaning that that you can have a high level of confidence that measurements will be correct first time, without the need of manual measuring or any costly mistakes down the line.

The point cloud data from the laser scanning produces millions of 3D coordinates, this means it can be used to pinpoint areas to the nearest 0.1mm. Having a highly accurate survey such as this means that any issues or mistakes can be picked up early before work begins.

Accuracy is vital within the construction industry, as is time and budget. That’s why more and more people are coming to us to benefit from the accuracy and detail of our 3D scanning technology.

The Benefits of Laser Scanning Technology

If time is not on your side or even if it is, laser scanning surveys are one of the best ways to produce a survey quickly for your project. Other surveys can take a lot of time and manpower to produce, but thanks to the technology and accuracy of laser scanning, a survey can be produced much more quickly and easily.

There are a lot of ways these surveys can be used, either for construction work such as reconstruction, repairs or extensions but also to provide detailed mapping of buildings inside and out, with full detailing so you can create an accurate model or even a 3D virtual tour of the building.

Having a survey such as this at your disposal means that you have an accurate representation of your building or land which can be used for any future projects or references so is certainly a worthwhile investment.
